In the IT world, we hear "imposter syndrome" a lot. I think it's probably happened to everybody. You also hear "fake it until you make it". Experience takes time, and with experience comes more confidence. In technology, I often find myself feeling like an imposter and having to "fake it". But over time I've realized that experience has led to a deeper understanding of the field. Something can be new, but because you've "stuck with it", you are in the imposter mode for a far shorter amount of time.
I know that's not exactly what you were getting at with your article, but it's what kept coming into my mind while I was reading it. I remembered being that young professional wondering why I was freezing up on something I should know off hand. And if I had quit, I'd still not know it.
Agree— experience is the unfake-able part of the process whether or not one has created a lot of thinking about who they are vs what the task requires. Identity can’t fake progress.
